Visit EUCLID CHAMBER OF COMMERCE’s calendar at ExperienceEuclid.com for two reasons:  to view the monthly calendar of community events, and to easily add your own happening where it reads “click here” on the top of the calendar.  Just fill out the blanks, and within 24 hours it will be approved and posted for all to see.

Everyone voicing an opinion on the future of the newsletter agreed that an event host should be responsible for writing and submitting their own ready to print article. “Too much information!”

 …is a phrase often spoken by an overwhelmed person with eyes squeezed shut and fingers jammed in the ears.  We want to be informed, but too much repeat information creates the opposite effect.  I intended to resume the newsletter in November in a big way after time off to refresh and rethink its structure, and I’m so grateful for the many offers of technical help to create a more streamlined process!  But the biggest obstacles – my drive to hunt down every event in town, need to please all tastes, and inability to settle for less – had no satisfactory resolution.  

Last week I learned the City of Euclid’s new website is already equipped with the marketing features I dreamed of creating, and will enable the city to send out regular notices of community events.  I then considered all the local newsletters and blogs that speak to target audiences rather than trying to be all things to all people.  So should I – as the overused phrase goes – reinvent the wheel by devoting time and money to new software and email programs only to tell you again what you will already know? By subscribing to  newsletters such as Bethlehem News & Notes, the Shore Breeze, Euclid Chamber of Commerce, and Nan’s Neighborhood Notes, and using the calendars on Euclid Chamber of Commerce’s ExperienceEuclid.com site (be sure to post your events there too!) and websites for the City of Euclid and Euclid Library, you can obtain much of the info you want without waiting for me to tediously rework it into yet another list that has grown too lengthy to read. 

Let’s try that and see how it goes?  Here’s an invitation to all those publishing or emailing information on a regular basis:  send me your signup info and I’ll print it next week in place of the newsletter.  Then, people can choose to receive the information that best applies to their interests.  And I can’t say it enough – if you’re representing a group holding an event, PLEASE post it on the ExperienceEuclid.com calendar! 

I believe there’s something more to be done with the website and for the great group of people on my email list. Maybe it’s time to return to the newsletter’s roots and go back outside to play in the community like we did in 2007? (Get your bike ready!) Your continued input and support is much appreciated and will assure that something worthwhile will evolve if we just remain open to it.

BETTER BRUNCHES AT THE BEACHLAND The State of Ohio has amended its liquor laws to permit full-strength Bloody Marys at 11 am. Second good news: the Beachland is hosting Get Hep Swing workshops in the ballroom from noon-3 on Sunday afternoons, so you can work off the brunch while learning cool steps (only $5). ARTS AND CRAFTS WITH PADRAIC PEARSE  The Padraic Pearse Center (the cultural arm of the Irish American club) holds its annual Arts and Crafts Fair  10 am to 4 p.m. at Irish American Club-East Side, 22770 Lake Shore. More than 40 tables of hand-crafted gifts, including baskets, handwovens, ceramics, wreaths, watercolors, jewelry, ornaments, candles and more. Refreshments available. $1 admission, free parking. CASEY AND OMAITZ IN THE GALLERY opens tonight. At first glance, these artists couldn’t be more different – Amy Casey’s continued reworking of the elements of houses and wires – old Cleveland houses, old Cleveland buildings, wire fences, swinging wires like a tornado of utility lines is so much more figurative than Jen Omaitz’ assemblages, prints and swirling paintings. But there are points of convergence – the Omaitz swirls often echo the tangled Casey wires, both palettes play off intense, subdued reds and blues against darker colors, and both turn out detailed, complex works that repay long, long looks. BIGSHOT TOYWORKS AT SHOPAROONI, presenting what devotees call “an absolutely amazing group show” featuring wooden DIY toy figures customized by more than 40 artists — including Cleveland’s own Amanda Spayd and Chris Ryniak. I know we keep telling you to stay out of malls and shop at galleries – but if you shop at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Legacy Village October 10-12, 20% of your purchase (10% of bistro purchases) will go to Cleveland Neighborhood Arts, a consortium of the groups sponsored by the Cleveland Foundation’s Neighborhood Connections program. All the money collected will buy musical instruments and art supplies for the children served by the groups; feel free to bring such donations with you, if you have them. The Arts Collinwood Art Center is offering happy-hour art classes on Mondays and Wednesdays; Michele Biondo will show you how to make jewelry from broken crockery (the small masterpieces created by china painters of the past come into focus when they’re not surrounded by a plate); she’ll also show you how to make simple stained glass designs. And there’ll be a garden art series, too, making wreaths, stepping stones, mobiles and such. Details below. 

PARTY WITH THE ART MERCHANTS October 10  Fall

The Waterloo shops and galleries have got together with the Slovenian Home for a festive evening of food and shopping: extremely good $5 sandwiches in the Slovenian Home’s bar (along with cheap beer) plus a bocce court plus in-store events all along the street. All inspired by a recent arrival in the neighborhood who loved the summer Arts Fest and wanted to keep the vibe going.

WATERLOO’S PUBLIC ART  October 12

Northeast Shores will hold a meeting to update and review plans for the tower installation in the plaza outside Arts Collinwood on Monday, October 12 at 6:00 pm in the Arts Collinwood Gallery. If you’re interested in the appearance of Waterloo Road, this is a meeting you should attend; the tower is a big investment as well as a big presence, and it will stand for a long time.

And if you’re really interested in public art here in Collinwood, look for the upcoming series “Art Endeavors” at Arts Collinwood Gallery on Oct 17 and 24 — two sessions (with wine and cheese) focused on the potential for public art and what it can accomplish here in our community.

THIS WEEK ON WATERLOO

ANOTHER DUMM ART SHOW AT ARTS COLLINWOOD October 9-31

  There’s a place in Cleveland where cats of bizarre geometries hang with politicians, zombies, musicians and other singular characters (including the writer/creator of American Splendor, Harvey Pekar).

  Gary and Laura Dumm have depicted all these beings and more in pen & ink and paint in their two-person art show at Arts Collinwood Gallery. The show’s opening reception, with treats and spirits, is October 9 from 6 pm till 9 pm. This exhibit offers the viewer a broad spectrum of techniques and sensibilities: from Laura’s lighter, funkified color approach in painting the feline to Gary’s ink drawings of blues people, cartoons and dark re-animated horrors.  It can also be viewed during open hours for the adjoining Waterloo Cafe, then closes rather appropriately on Halloween.   Bring your imagination, a love of color (and black & white) and maybe a few “treats”, some of these beasties look hungry!

TENTH ANNUAL ROOTS OF AMERICAN MUSIC BENEFIT AT BEACHLAND

Since 1999, Roots of American Music (ROAM) has been connecting individuals young and old to the history and spirit of our country through traditional American music. ROAM’s 10th Anniversary Benefit for Education, featuring singer-songwriter Alex Bevan and none other than Michael Stanley, will offer an intimate all-acoustic concert, weaving the songs and stories that defined being young, alive and seeking one’s fate in Northern Ohio for the last quarter century. Concert-only tickets are $50 for the 7 pm show. PNK-EYE SIXTH ISSUE PARTY AT THE BEACHLAND

Pink Eye magazine is a glossy zine detailing the arts, culture and music scene in Northeast Ohio, with a firm grasp of the punk/avant ethos and how that connects with what it sees as Cleveland’s dystopian nature. Celebrating their sixth issue, the publishers decided to hold a little shindig in the Tavern at 10:30 pm. On this bill will be The Buried Wires, Electronic funk duo Arte Povera, noisy pop combo Chief Bromide and pinball prog-metal quartet Self Destruct Button. SHOPAROONI’S SECOND BIRTHDAY

Not on Waterloo – but doesn’t it sound attractive? Opera per Tutti was brought to my attention by one of the other four gardeners who attended the first meeting of the Northern Ohio Perennial Society in 1981. Opera Per Tutti and the Amethyst String Quartet  present Mozar  by Candlelight in the First Baptist Church of Shaker Heights (corner of Fairmount and Eaton) on Saturday, October 10 at 8 PM. OCEAN EXPLORATION WORKSHOP  October 16

The Center for Science and Mathematics Education at Case Western Reserve University is presenting a professional development workshop for teachers, librarians and anyone who works with children and is interested in ocean science (home schoolers included). PanDeMonium (the Shaker Heights greens growers) were selling radicchio to cook “like collards, only faster.” I stocked up on apples at the Rigginses, who also provided dear little Chinese chestnuts (stab each one with a knife and bake it in oven or microwave till soft; salt and savor); Mrs Riggins had to fight a squirrel for them, but she’s a doughty lady. Acorn squash at three for $2 (or $1 apiece) were too good to resist – and they make a very nice gift. Really.

EUCLID COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER IS TAKING A BREAK.

Surprised?  Me too!  Until I wrote this I didn’t believe it either, but it’s time.

Although recent newsletters are stuffed with facts, this began as a little blog about local events. When the Journal left I felt obligated to add some news to the mix.  I find myself in the uncomfortable place where some now expect me to behave like a newspaper and adopt the standards of a reporter, and others want me to represent their causes.  In addition, many no longer send in events because they count on me to hunt them down– a terribly time consuming job– and if I fail to do so, I often hear about it later. The pressure of meeting expectations is taking its toll.  It’s really stressful to evolve in public! 

Euclid’s on the verge of exciting NEWS opportunities.  You may feel lost without the Journal, but all eyes are on Euclid’s needs and there are many folks both in and out of the city anxious to fill that news void.  It’s time for me to decide if, and where, I fit in!  Should I continue this extremely time consuming unpaid job until it’s no longer needed?  Join forces with an interactive online community paper?  Or step out of the way?  To help make that decision, I need to try on how it feels to have my mornings, lunch hours, evenings and vacations free again. 

This issue contains the October events I have to date, so hang onto it for reference because I will probably not send any more newsletters this month.  Be sure to visit the websites boxed at the end of the October listings to access the area calendars containing lots of events not printed below.

I’ll continue to update the website’s pages with any info you send for garage sale ads and news articles.  I’ll also post Nan Kennedy’s Neighborhood Notes from Waterloo there each week.

Our Waterloo correspondent suggests we stroll across the street to WATERLOO 7 GALLERY to “see the wind chimes made from drum cymbals hanging in the Sculpture Garden beside the gallery – very charming. M. Forbes’ papierdogs (colorful companions in papier mache) are a giggle. Marcus Braithwaite’s pen and ink drawings are delicate delights. Barbara Daberkow’s (extremely reasonable) fabric bags are precisely crafted and practical, as well. But what really won my heart were Laurel Herbold’s drizzled paintings – with paint left over from her bread-and-butter murals, Laurel creates intricate tangles (yarn? Brain prions? The Internet?) overlaid with a close approximation of Arabic calligraphy. The colors are soothing, the execution immaculate. There’s a place in Cleveland where cats of bizarre geometries hang with politicians, zombies, musicians and other singular characters (including the writer/creator of American Splendor, Harvey Pekar). Let’s talk about people, not buildings.

They’re the reason this newsletter weighed in at a mind-numbing 14 pages last week. The people INSIDE the buildings have worked for their causes longer than some readers have been alive!  Whether they’re in the churches that provide for our community’s needs, the non profits pouring hours of volunteer time into fundraisers and housekeeping tasks to keep the organization running a few more months, the shops & galleries on Waterloo aspiring to become the “Eastside Tremont”, or the community centers committed to entertaining, educating, caring for and supporting us, these tired cheerleaders deserve the boost one gets from being appreciated. 

What better way to say thanks than for us to pick at least one event or volunteer opportunity from the newsletter each week that we may never have considered before, and give it a try!

Euclid has a free gallery show of its own, the EDITORIAL ART EXHIBIT from the collection of the late Bill Jerse in LAKESHORE COFFEE HOUSE.  See his cartoons featured in the Sun Journal which frequently targeted political figures and developers.  His hard hitting style is missed by many who admired his criticism and courage to put it in print.  Prints on display will change weekly, so stop in often to catch them all.

Our Waterloo correspondent suggests we stroll across the street to WATERLOO 7 GALLERY to “see the wind chimes made from drum cymbals hanging in the Sculpture Garden beside the gallery – very charming. M. Forbes’ papierdogs (colorful companions in papier mache) are a giggle. Marcus Braithwaite’s pen and ink drawings are delicate delights. Barbara Daberkow’s (extremely reasonable) fabric bags are precisely crafted and practical, as well. But what really won my heart were Laurel Herbold’s drizzled paintings – with paint left over from her bread-and-butter murals, Laurel creates intricate tangles (yarn? Brain prions? The Internet?) overlaid with a close approximation of Arabic calligraphy. The colors are soothing, the execution immaculate. v     The City of Euclid’s updated website— www.cityofeuclid.com –is full of links & info that formerly were hard to find, and the new calendar puts City & Recreation Department info right where you want it. Check it out!

 v     The new, improved Euclid Chamber of Commerce calendar at ExperienceEuclid.com invites everyone to post their community events and meetings directly to the calendar with the click of a mouse!  Be sure yours is there for others to see.

 v     Euclid Library’s site www.euclidlibrary.org is not just about books, it’s another great source of current community info as well as rarely seen/heard historical videos and audio clips from Euclid years past. 

 v     The Euclid Community Newsletter will continue to publish Euclid/ N Collinwood events (send yours to info@euclidwellness.org ), and is willing to grow even more to accommodate your need for news & community info by adding relevant pages as needed to the website, EuclidWellness.org, for your input.  To submit articles, read the guidelines on each page.

 ANTIQUE APPRAISALS in the Euclid Library takes a unique approach—no reservations, the first 30 people at the door of the Shore Rm. for this 6:30 PM program receive a ticket to have their items appraised and the rest become the audience.  Tom Jerpbok from Ye Olde Oaken Bucket Antiques will return again in November for those who miss a ticket this time around. 

 The next meeting of the EUCLID DEMOCRATIC CLUB is 7 PM at Kristy’s Tavern, 434 E. 200. On the agenda are endorsements for upcoming city council and school board elections.  All are welcome to attend. Parking is in the lot behind Kristy’s.

EXCITING NEWS FOR EUCLID!  As announced here recently, the CLEVELAND HOME AND GARDEN SHOW is coming to Euclid in January—but there’s more!  Not only will the 73rd Annual Cleveland Sport, Travel and Outdoor Show be there in February, the press release from Expositions, Inc claims “the Great Lakes Expo Center will be busy 12 months a year hosting events as wide ranging as Bridal Fairs and Custom Car Cruise-Ins to Cheerleading Competitions, Indoor Soccer tournaments and even Mixed Martial Arts events. A Sports Fan Fest celebrating collegiate and professional teams of Northeast Ohio is also on the horizon.  ‘By 2011, we anticipate hosting at least 125 events per year,’ says Fassnacht.”

The Ohio Library for the Blind & Physically Disabled (OLBPD) is pleased to announce that our annual Family Fun & Learning Day will take place on Wednesday, September 16th, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Family Fun & Learning Day will be held at the Cleveland Public Library’s Memorial-Nottingham Branch, 17109 Lake Shore Boulevard , Cleveland , Ohio 44110 . Family Fun & Learning Day 2009 will be the library’s first official function since being renamed the Ohio Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled. We hope all patrons throughout Ohio will be able to join us for the day in which we celebrate the library’s new mission as well as the National Library Service’s migration to the new digital talking book service. OLBPD has also extended an invitation to some of Ohio ’s legislators, library representatives throughout Ohio and from the State Library of Ohio to join us for Family Fun & Learning Day.

Family Fun & Learning Day 2009 will feature a full day of very special programs. Family Fun & Learning Day will begin with tours of the library’s sensory garden led by Ben Zaremba, the garden’s designer. For those patrons who have not visited the garden in September, you are in for a real treat. The Sensory Garden during the late summer is vastly different from the June display. A representative from the National Library Service (NLS) will be here to update patrons on NLS activities, and to host the induction of our 2009 class of 102 (Ten Squared) Club readers who are 100 years of age or older. All centenarians will receive induction into the National Library Service’s 102 (Ten Squared) Club, and receive a certificate of recognition, a pin, and perhaps a new digital talking book player if available.

Family Fun & Learning Day’s featured program will be a talk from Les Roberts, noted mystery writer and author of the very popular Milan Jacovich series. He is an engaging speaker who will share his stories with us. Even if mysteries are not quite your style, then come to learn more about Cleveland . John Polk, who narrated Mr. Robert’s books will speak on his experiences narrating books for the American Printing House for our patrons. Lunchtime entertainment will be provided by OLBPD patron and accomplished pianist Jack Desmond.

Family Fun & Learning Day will also include insider stories from Ken Redd who worked in the corporate marketing department of the Cleveland Indians from 1994-2000. Ken now works for the Cleveland Public Library. He worked with the Tribe during the Cleveland Indians glory years when they won two American League Championships in 1995 and 1997. Ken is the person who actually handed President Bill Clinton the baseball on opening day at Jacob’s Field (now Progressive Field). He promises to bring stories and memorabilia, including his two American League championship rings.

Other activities for the day include discussion and demonstrations of the new NLS digital talking book service. Jim Buchman from the State Library of Ohio, the agency responsible for the distribution of talking book machines, will be on hand to answer questions and distribute digital talking book players to those patrons in attendance that are on the waiting list. As a reminder, patrons can still be added to the digital player waiting list.

Currently, NLS plans to begin shipping digital players in August. Patrons who are on the waiting list and wish to receive their digital talking book player at Family Fun & Learning Day must RSVP to confirm their pickup. For those patrons who cannot attend Family Fun & Learning Day, machines will be mailed to you as they become available. This special opportunity to pick up a digital talking book player is to celebrate the launching of the new digital talking book service from NLS.

Technology expert Irwin Hott will be discussing what is new in the area of technology, and also provide a “Computers 101” for those wishing to learn more about computers and technology available to people who are blind or have low vision. Family Fun & Learning day will also have exhibitors from Universal Low Vision Aids (ULVA), The Cleveland Sight Center, Magnifiers and More, The Statler Center, and more.

Seats will be limited so be sure to register for Family Fun & Learning Day 2009. Pizza and soft drinks will be available for a freewill donation. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch with you. Staff from OLBPD will not be available to make lunch runs to local fast food restaurants. For our patrons who are traveling from afar, OLBPD can provide you with a list of accommodations from the very plush to comfortable and affordable.

Two day WAY OF LIFE GOSPEL CHURCH FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION on Sat 9/5 at 5 PM and Sun 9/6 at 10:45 AM at 300 Euclid Square Mall, S.E. entrance.  Theme is “We Are Here for a Purpose.” Saturday’s program includes a small play/skit, psalmist, mime and the Word by Pastor Bob Kistenmaker of Lakewood New Life Church. Sunday’s program includes Praise and Worship, praise dancing and the Word by Pastor Irma Williams of The Hundredfold Church. Sunday at 2 PM, the celebration continues with a dinner reception at The Bluffs Hal, 4911 Richmond Rd, Richmond Heights. Attend either service to receive a ticket to the dinner.

Euclid Creek is one of the most accessible and widely used areas for fishing and public access in Cuyahoga County. Want to ride around Euclid in a police car? The CITIZENS’ POLICE ACADEMY is an 11 week program beginning Sept 15 that gives participants a working knowledge of the EPD and its operational methods.  The free series of classes and discussions is held on Tuesdays from 6:30-10 PM. Limited to 20 students, it offers you that very chance to tour the city from the inside of a car if you wish!  In addition, graduates are encouraged to join the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, allowing the opportunity for continued education in law enforcement and other related areas. Applications available in the EPD lobby or at Online Services.  Applications are held until the class starts, those who pre-register are given favor for participation.
